Summary

Boasting enough power to one-shot large swaths of the draft metagame, Slaking might be the best capstone mon for a draft in the entire format. Many teams only have one Normal resistance, and that simply isn't enough to check the 'King on its own. Because of this, your opponent is forced to run Protect on important mons or risk getting completly run over. Slaking shines on teams with complimentary defensive typings, as when your opponent is forced to run robust coverage to make progress slotting Protect becomes tricky. Even if your opponent uses Protect in front of slaking, it's an opportunity to make a free double switch. Coupled with monstrous offensive power, Slaking also has respectable defensive utility. Its physical bulk allows it to absorb a hit or two from a boosted Dragon Dance user and one-shot them in return. Access to Encore keeps other setup sweepers in check thanks to its 100 base speed stat, allowing it to often get the jump. This makes it a great partner for walls that can otherwise be exploited such as Lanturn and Milotic.

Despite all this upside, Slaking is still a fundamentally flawed pokemon due to its ability Truant, which makes it unable to act every other turn. It needs partners that can take a hit while it pivots around, and appreciates Wish support to stay healthy. There also isn't much set diversity for Slaking -- you will often want to run Choice Band to capitalize on its outrageous Attack stat. It gets several good Normal-type options in Hyper Beam, Double-Edge, Return, and even the occasional Fury Swipes to cover Substitute. Earthquake, Rock Slide, Shadow Ball, Brick Break, Focus Punch, and Hidden Power are often paired with the aforementioned hard-hitting normal moves for coverage, which can be handpicked in the draft format for specific matchups. If there's room to slot a utility move, there are some great options to choose from that cover various scenarios such as Counter, Slack Off, Encore, Roar, Taunt, and Yawn. In short, Slaking is a cheap and impactful addition to almost any team. At best, it's an unstoppable wrecking ball, and at worst it forces your opponent to make hard decisions in the builder from the bench.

About

This page interfaces with a database that I maintain and collect data for from a specific format of Pokemon competition I enjoy called "ADV Draft". I have a few posts about it on this site -- one talking about how I initially went about data storage and some of the stats I use, and another about "graduating" from Google Sheets to a standard relational database and actually setting this part of my website up, and a third about adding more advanced analytics to the site.

I manually update this database as tournaments finish as I don't feel like paying money to host the database separately. The most recent finished tournament I have in the database is Zinc-Tratufo Draft League Season 2, which ended on 2/15/2025. I don't have stats for tournaments in progress here. I also don't have (or want) stats for team tournaments.

If you have a tournament you think I should add to my database or a summary for a Pokemon, give me a shout at the contact info on my home page -- I'll be happy to talk to you! This also applies to custom data requests -- send me an email with the subject "ADV DB Custom Data Request" (or similar) and I'll see what I can do for you!

All sprites are pulled from Smogon and all replays are pulled from Pokemon Showdown. This site uses Stuart Langridge's sorttable script.
