Summary
Ampharos is a solid Cleric and Special tank in ADV Draft. With an Electric resistance, no Special weaknesses, powerful STAB Thunderbolts, and access to coveted utility options such as Heal Bell, Thunder Wave, and Screens, Ampharos is one of the best answers to Raikou and Zapdos in the tier. Seismic Toss allows it to check Calm Mind boosters and spread reliable, if unimpressive, damage against Electric resists. Ampharos' Attack is high enough to be usable, and it learns options such as Focus Punch which, in combination with Toxic and Heal Bell, allow it to check targets like Blissey which may otherwise wall or set up on it. It must be noted that Ampharos' Physical bulk is only passable, and its weakness to Earthquake allows most Physical attackers to punch through it if they so choose. It can tank a Physical hit or two and strike back with Thunderbolt or Thunder Wave, but care should be taken to maintain Ampharos' health if it's to perform its role as a Special tank long-term, as its lack of recovery and vulnerability to Spikes limit its ability to switch in consistently.
Good partners for Ampharos include top tiers such as Starmie, Dragonite, and Skarmory who appreciate Ampharos' ability to tank Thunderbolts, while Metagross, Aerodactyl, Salamence, and Tyranitar benefit from its clerical capabilities and the pressure it puts on bulky Waters. Flying-Types and Levitate users also make excellent partners for Ampharos, as they can switch into Earthquakes directed at it and lure in Electric-Type attacks and weak Hidden Powers that glance off of Ampharos. Charizard, Gyarados, and the aforementioned Dragons are all fine options. They are also not weak to Spikes, potentially discouraging opponents from leaning into strategies reliant on them. Ampharos also pairs well with Wish users, as they can keep it healthy while Ampharos clears the team of Status. Vaporeon deserves special mention, as it is dreadfully weak to Toxic and its tendency to attract Thunderbolts allows Ampharos in often.
In all, Ampharos should be considered for teams that need an answer to Raikou or Zapdos or that would otherwise appreciate a sturdy Electric resist, particularly if the team struggles to deal with Grass or Ice coverage or has multiple Pokemon weak to Status. Teams who need a way to consistently break through Water-Types such as Vaporeon or Milotic can also look to Ampharos, as it is one of the few Pokemon that can reliably switch into and shrug off any of their options.

About
This page interfaces with a database that I maintain and collect data for from a specific format of Pokemon competition I enjoy called "ADV Draft". I have a few posts about it on this site -- one talking about how I initially went about data storage and some of the stats I use, and another about "graduating" from Google Sheets to a standard relational database and actually setting this part of my website up, and a third about adding more advanced analytics to the site.
I manually update this database as tournaments finish as I don't feel like paying money to host the database separately. The most recent finished tournament I have in the database is Zinc-Tratufo Draft League Season 2, which ended on 2/15/2025. I don't have stats for tournaments in progress here. I also don't have (or want) stats for team tournaments.
If you have a tournament you think I should add to my database or a summary for a Pokemon, give me a shout at the contact info on my home page -- I'll be happy to talk to you! This also applies to custom data requests -- send me an email with the subject "ADV DB Custom Data Request" (or similar) and I'll see what I can do for you!
All sprites are pulled from Smogon and all replays are pulled from Pokemon Showdown. This site uses Stuart Langridge's sorttable script.
