Summary

Aerodactyl has the distinction of being tied for the third-fastest Pokemon in the entire format with Jolteon, having a blisteringly fast speed stat of 130 (behind Electrode at 140 and Ninjask at 160). Unlike its fast counterparts, however, Aerodactyl has an attack stat of 105, Sandstorm immunity, and Spikes immunity, alongside the ability to hit important speed benchmarks such as outspeeding Tyranitar after using a Dragon Dance. It can equip Choice Band to make its already high attack even scarier, and its combination of Earthquake, Rock Slide, and Double-Edge is unresisted by any Pokemon. However, the prehistoric bird does have its weaknesses -- a typing that is weak to Ice and Electric makes it a poor partner to Pokemon such as Flygon, Salamence, or Gyarados which bait Hidden Power with their quad weaknesses, and relative frailty compared to the rest of the draft metagame makes it hard to switch in. However, if Aerodactyl is able to get in safely, you must be prepared to answer it.

Aerodactyl is typically drafted in the second round in ADV drafts, as it is crowded out of early picks by Pokemon that fill broader roles on a team such as Metagross and Snorlax. It is often paired with Celebi for those picking sixth, seventh, or eighth, who is able to force out bulky Water types which can otherwise check Aerodactyl, such as Milotic and Suicune -- however, those early in the draft order will likely not be able to snag Aerodactyl without sacrificing a better first-round pick. In a format such as draft where teams cannot easily pile on Aerodactyl checks, it serves as a great late-game cleaner and it is extremely important to build a team with this Pokemon in mind. Teams that are very weak to Ground, Rock, or Flying will struggle against an Aerodactyl that is able to switch in. As mentioned earlier, Aerodactyl often runs Choice Band, but has other quirkier options such as Curse and Thief to utilize in a pinch.

About

This page interfaces with a database that I maintain and collect data for from a specific format of Pokemon competition I enjoy called "ADV Draft". I have a few posts about it on this site -- one talking about how I initially went about data storage and some of the stats I use, and another about "graduating" from Google Sheets to a standard relational database and actually setting this part of my website up, and a third about adding more advanced analytics to the site.

I manually update this database as tournaments finish as I don't feel like paying money to host the database separately. The most recent finished tournament I have in the database is Zinc-Tratufo Draft League Season 2, which ended on 2/15/2025. I don't have stats for tournaments in progress here. I also don't have (or want) stats for team tournaments.

If you have a tournament you think I should add to my database or a summary for a Pokemon, give me a shout at the contact info on my home page -- I'll be happy to talk to you! This also applies to custom data requests -- send me an email with the subject "ADV DB Custom Data Request" (or similar) and I'll see what I can do for you!

All sprites are pulled from Smogon and all replays are pulled from Pokemon Showdown. This site uses Stuart Langridge's sorttable script.
